Sainte-Maxime is a commune in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region on the French Riviera (Côte d’Azur) in southeastern France. Less ritzy than many of its Côte d’Azur neighbours, this small town has an unflashy lifestyle suited less to film stars than to the saint it is named after. Maxime was a daughter of a ninth-century Count of Grasse, who rejected his wealth, turned her back on her family and took herself off to nearby Callian, where she founded a convent.
